Strolling SoHo; Browsing Kate Spade
March 31, 2007
On our second afternoon, we walked 5-6 blocks from Canal Street to the SoHo area and
ate at the Broome Street Bar. Very good sandwiches. Nice atmosphere. Good prices. From there we strolled the streets and shops of SoHo, ambling in no particular direction.
We did stop in the
Kate Spade Store, the only one of its kind in New York City. Since I was only accustomed to shopping Canal Street for Kate Spade, I was intriqued by the wide selection of styles at the store. Most of those are not available as Canal Street copies. Of course, the prices are quite different for knock-offs than at the flagship KS store on Broome Street.
We went inside a very sophisticated dog accessory store with a minimalist, but very expensive collection of items for the upscale pooch.

One of the unusual shops we entered was SICIS.
We didn’t know at the outset what exactly the shop’s product was or if it was an art gallery. The windows would tell you it’s an art gallery. But we discovered that they sold small ceramic tiles with which all of their artwork was created. Amazing and worth stopping inside.
We browsed through a number of small clothing boutiques, but could have spent hours covering the many, many places in SoHo. But we saved some of those for another trip as we had to get back to our hotel to pick up our luggage and get on our way to the airport.

TIPS:
1) Morgans Hotel. We stayed at the Morgans Hotel in Midtown. Very nice rooms. Good value and great location. Free continental breakfast — saves bucks for shopping! We didn’t care for the lower level bar however. Drinks were okay, but a retro-tacky decor heavy with the color orange.
2) Whaler Bar at the Jolly Hotel Madison Towers. Around the corner from the Morgans was the Jolly Hotel Madison Towers. Looked like a very nice hotel. The cocktail lounge there was first class. Very comfortable. Offers Jolly Hour from 4-6, I believe. Drinks were 2/1 and a nice substantial assortment of hors d’oeuvres were served. It was a great place to stop before heading to the airport.
