Take a 1-Day Trip to NYC — Save $300 or More!

One-Day Roundtrip NYC Airfare Just $200
Visiting New York City is a hot topic on my blog. I have at least 19 posts out there about different parts of the city and the myriad of things to see and places to shop. Inside St. Patrick’s CathedralMy blog statistics tell me that readers have a big interest in visiting NYC right now or in the very near future. The Lure of Canal Street and a number of other NYC posts have been top reading now for some weeks. So if you’re interested, it’s time to get out there and have some fun.

Such a Deal on Traditionally Expensive One-Day Fares. It’s tough to find a budget fare for one-day turnaround trips. A quick scan found one-day fares to NYC range from $544 and go up from there. But I can offer you a group discount of just $200 per person for a 1-day roundtrip (or even a 2-day roundtrip) to New York if you can get 8 friends together for the trip. Plus, a 1-day trip saves you the cost of a hotel.

8 Is Enough.
That may seem like a lot of people to travel with — but who Metropolitan Museum of Artsays you have to stick together once you reach the city? Pair up or 4-up and see the things that interest you the most. Canal Street for knock-off purses? The Guggenheim, Met or other museums? People-watching in SoHo? Fifth Avenue browsing? Then meet up at the airport for your flight home.

Here’s the deal:

  • $200/person is a group rate that includes all taxes.
  • 8-26 people can be in your group
  • Seats are based on availability. All of your group members must travel together on the same flights outbound and on the return.
  • This special fare can only apply to Tuesday or Wednesday travel. Go out and back on one day. Or go out on Tuesday and return home on Wednesday.
  • Designate 1 person to at as your group’s contact person.
  • Travel now through December 19, 2007.
  • Once group reservations are confirmed, a $50 deposit per seat is required, with final payment due 30 days before departure.
  • Contact Midwest Airlines Group Sales folks for more information and to make your reservation. Call them at 888-601-4296, then choose Option #1. (This group special is not available online.)
  • Use promo code GGG when you call.

Other City Options
This 1-day roundtrip option (or 2-day option) is available from:

E-mail me if you have questions about New York, Washington or Philadelphia at girlfriends-getaway@midwestairlines.com. For all questions regarding the airfare deal, you must contact the Midwest Airlines Group department.

New York makes a terrific one-day trip for shopping, sightseeing, people-watching, dining or tours.!

Fabrics, Buttons, Sample Sales in New York

Watch for “Sample Sales.”
New York’s Garment District is one of those places you might not run across in a typical tourist visit to the Big Apple. And as I’ve mentioned in my last post, most of the designer showrooms are not open to the public — unless you’re on a pre-arranged tour with Pam Parisi. But many of the showrooms do run occasional sample sales for the public. So only enter the shops or showrooms if you see a “Sample Sale” sign out front. Even though some of the ground floor showrooms have fashions displayed in their window, they are not open to street traffic shoppers.

Fabrics, Buttons, Bows and Ribbon
Now these are the shops you can visit and buy from — even if you’re just a regular shopper. There are a phenomenal number of shops at street level, jam-packed with bolts of Close up of a fabric sample.fabric. Other shops specialize in buttons, beads, ribbons, trims and other notions. So if you like to sew, are a quilter, are looking for a special fabric, or just want to browse, you are welcome to do so in these kind of Garment District shops. Here’s a link to some of them.

TIPS:
1) Fashion Center/Garment District.
Both are the same part of town. Fashion Center is just a newer name. Here’s a map of the district.
2) Fabric Shop Locations. Most of the fabric, button, ribbon and trim shops are located on 39th and 40th Streets, between 7th and 8th Avenues.
3) Cash or Credit Card? Check out the list of shops on the link provided above. Go on their Web sites or call ahead to see if they take credit cards or only cash. It may vary from shop to shop.
4) Specialty Fabrics. Most everything is out there. Sewers and quilters will love these shops. Fake fur, lace, cottons, dupioni, silk organza, drapery and uphostery fabrics, cashmere, leather, wool, linen. Lots of discounts, end-of-mill runs, and special bargains.

Garment District Tour in New York

Our two whirlwind days in New York began with an organized tour in the Garment District with Tightwad Treks (Elegant Tightwad Shopping Excursions). As soon as we stepped off our Midwest Airlines flight at La Guardia, we called Pam Parisi, the tour diva, to arrange our meeting at 3-14-07-garment-district.jpgthe first showroom, Linda Richards on West 38th Street.

Here we found very high quality coats, suits, jackets and more — bound for the biggest of the big-name New York stores. Current and next season items were available for purchase — all at a substantial (I mean SUBSTANTIAL) coats-at-linda-richards.jpgsavings over retail. She also had about 300 pairs of one-of-a-kind Bettye Muller designer sample shoes selling for $75/pair instead of the $300-$400 retail price. These are the kind of shoes sold at Bergdorf Goodman and other top stores. (She does not always have shoes. Her employees areSample Bettye Muller Shoes. not yet “cutting” for next season, so the shoes were displayed on the cutting table. But if they are cutting, you can see them in action. Linda Richards, like the other designer showrooms we visited, is not open to the public. But she does offer a public sample sale during the week before Easter and the week before Thanksgiving.

More Backroom Fashions.
We visited another 6 or 7 showrooms, most small but most intriguing. None of them sell retail to the public, and most do not want their names used. But the styles covered a wideAnother “unnamed” designer showroom. range from chic and sassy to classic. Sizes available were primarily sample sizes. One shop actually purchases designer items from retailers, copies the designs and then makes their own patterns to create copies. A few shops had accessoires, belts and purses — but for a better selection, take the Accessories Tour.

Back Fashion Cult. I think the most fun showroom was that of Back Fashion Cult, owned by a very nice woman named Sihan. She had funky, chic and very fun clothing and accessories, primarily French and Italian lines. A woman from Dallas was on our tour with her 17-year-old daughter. Their mission was to find a memorable prom dress. Sihan had dozens to show her and every dress the young woman tried on looked absolutely terrific. No girl in Texas will have a dress quite like she will as Sihan’s clothing is unique, sophisticated and totally unlike any traditional prom dresses you’d find on department store racks.

Custom Fabric Flowers — Showroom and WorkromOne more workroom/showroom of interest was M&S that made custom fabric flowers for couture apparel, bridal, millinery and home decor markets.

We loved the tour. Pam and her assistant tour leader, Pilar, were wonderfully accommodating as they tried to recommend showrooms that suited the interests of the people on the tour. I’d definitely take the tour again!

NEXT: Shecky’s Girls Night Out

TIPS:
1) Plan Your Tour.
If you have enough women, ask for a private tour. That way you can go to the showrooms most suited to your style, size and fashion sense. But if you go with multiple generations in your group (Grandma, 40-somethings and teenagers), you’ll find that every showroom will not suit everyone in your group. Go with women of similar age and taste and you’ll be happier.
2) Talk to Pam Before Your Tour. Give her an idea of what you might be looking for — an evening dress, business suit, casual, funky, tiny sizes or mature sizes, etc.
3) A Variety of Tours. Tightwad Treks also offers an Uptown Consignment Crawl, an Accessory Addict Tour, Vintage Clothing Shop Tour and a Downtown Diva Tour.
4) Tour Prices. Tour prices start at $45 for a 2-hour tour. Ours was $90 for a 4-hour tour. Pam also gives information about current sales that you can attend on your own after the tour. And she gives each participant a copy of her book.
