Country Club Plaza — The Kansas City Shopping Destination

October 6, 2006 at 7:00 am 1 comment

Affectionately known as the Plaza, this is a well-known fine sA typical corner in the Plazahopping district that encompasses 15 blocks and features more than 150 shops and restaurants. Perhaps one of its most endearing qualities is its architecture.

The Plaza is considered a museum of Spanish architecture Spanish architecture at Country Club Plazaand European art, designed in 1922 as the country’s first suburban shopping district. It is unique and absolutely enchanting. Turrets, art, sculpture and grace are visible from every corner and will lure you into gawking like a tourist.

But the shops and restaurants will try to keep you indoors exploring the goods of fine designers from around the world. 100_0476.jpgIncluded on the list of shops are names like Armani, Adrienne Vittadini, Betsey Johnson, Burberry, Brighton, Coach, Cole Haan, J.Jill, Mario Tricoci, Mark Shale, N. Valentino, Tiffany and White House/Black Market. Plan to spend more than a day if you want to browse all the shops. Buying is optional; having the time to browse them all can be just as much fun.

You’ll have 30 restaurants to choose from in the district and a number of hotels. And when you’re done shopping, get the girls together for a carriage ride or relax in a gondola along Country Club Plaza’s River Walk.

If you’d like to include some museum hopping, visit the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art or the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art – both are near the Plaza and both considered excellent art museums.

While there are many great areas in Kansas City, when I make my third getaway visit, I’ll stay in the Country Club Plaza area and spend most of my time enjoying its many shopping, dining and entertainment options.
