Basia — How about San Diego or Los Angeles — or somewhere in between those two cities? Phoenix offers a number of great options including Scottsdale, Tucson and Sedona (the red rock area). I like all three, but found Sedona to be a most interesting area. It has become a well-respected arts community with more than 300 local artists. Another side to Sedona is the awesome energy said to be generated through the many natural vortex sites that dot the area. Those who value natural healing, meditation and spiritual rejuvenation bask in the invisible energy of these sites. Maybe that’s worth exploring in the winter.

Anne — If you don’t mind traveling alone, then you would be comfortable in most any destination. I think Minneapolis and Kansas City are terrific — for arts, theatre, music and shopping. Of course, both have a wide array of spas for some personal pampering. Minneapolis has some nice street-level shopping areas just outside the city — St. Louis Park, 50th and France and Grand Avenue in St. Paul. All make lovely excursions. The light rail system makes it very easy to get from the airport to the Mall of America and all the way downtown to Nicollet Mall. For those little excursions outside the city, I’d say “cab it.”

Basia — You may also consider Atlanta — the weather should be comfortable there in February — great shopping, dining, resorts. But don’t overlook Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa or Ft. Myers area in early February. Depends on what kind of activities you’d like to plan — shopping, relaxing, beaches, whatever. But the Florida destinations come into peak season around Presidents’ weekend, so I’d recommend an early February trip. Hope this helps.

Such as trendy shopping, spa, music or theatre, beach, waterfront in general, casinos, historic sightseeing, general sightseeing, winter sports, art museums????? I travel often to visit my out of state children (they pay airfare)
but I hesitate to travel and vacation alone since my husband’s death three years ago. I’ve looked into Elderhostel but the places I would like to visit leave gaps in transportation that I am unsure about. I also have quite a few Midwest Miles accumulated. (I picked up a copy of Today’s Wisconsin Woman and was pleasantly surprised to find your website.)

We have two nonstop flights a day between Kansas City and Orlando. Our Signature Service (2-by-2 wide leather seating throughout the Boeing 717 aircraft. Adjustable headrest and footrest as well.). Very comfortable way to fly. I’ll be visiting Orlando in early May and will be writing some posts about what to see and do around that area.

Sorry, I have no “pull” at Wildcatter Ranch. Have you called them to talk about rates? My friend and I thought their rates were very reasonable based on what you get for your money. Top-drawer accommodations. A very nice continental breakfast. Wonderful pool and hot tub. A reasonably-priced, but excellent onsite restaurant. Fabulous view of this 4,000 acre ranch from your room. Talk to them about off-season and what rates might be then. May be worth postponing your birthday trip.

do you know about the Foods of New York tours?
Definitely a must- covers either Soho, Chelsea market
or Greenvich village- you get to walk, eat and hear the
history with a guide for about 3hrs.

Just found your site. I am turning 40 next summer (2008) and really want a girls trip to celebrate. I live in Tulsa and have friends here and in Central Illinois that I want to join me on this jaunt. I’m thinking about 8 of us total. If there is airfare they’ll pay but I’d like to pick up lodging such as a condo or flat rental. Anything come to mind? Midwest would be convenient but other locations are open since I want a new experience. Really trying to think outside the box here!

Hi Tish-first time to your blog—it’s great—my husb and i have vacation from 9/22-9/30—we live in central WI so can leave from MKE, MSP, MSN, ORD or any others in area—our son was in hosp at Mayo for 8 wks this summer and i stayed they whole time so my travel budget is almost zilch—-any ideas—i really need to get away—though about Toronto–you mentioned bead stores—are these for making jewelry or sewing? i make jewelry and that would be right up my alley

JALAYNE—
If you’re on a tight budget, I’d recommend Kansas City. Read my posts — there’s a lot to do and it’s pretty inexpensive. Our car rentals have been about $9/day (plus $13 or so taxes/fees). Many attractions/museums are free. Even street parking is free. BBQ is great. 4 casinos if you feel lucky. Lots of blues music. Several nice shopping areas. NASCAR and other sports venues.
San Antonio was also very reasonable. We stayed at a nice B&B that was inexpensive. A short walk to the Riverwalk and the downtown area. Strolling the Riverwalk, stopping at a cafe for a drink and appetizer if very fun.
Toronto is big with lots of areas that are interesting. We cut our hotel budget by going for a 4-star hotel on Priceline. Got a Westin, I believe, for $85/night. Can’t remember much about the bead shops, but sewing stores seem everywhere. Toronto has a great surface streetcar system, plus an easy-to-use subway system around downtown. No need for a car. We did a lot of walking. Also there is Underground Toronto under most of the city, along with the subway. Lots of shopping down there. Didn’t get to explore it all, but what we saw was very nice.
Charlotte may be a good choice this time of year. It’s new service for Midwest with an intro fare of $198/nonstop/roundtrip. You’d need a car. The leaves should start turning mid September. Short drive to the mountains, to Hickory (furniture mart country), to small towns with craftspeople.

My daughter is 17 and we are looking for somewhere to go in mid March. We have thought about New York, but it is so expensive. Also, Toronto because we would love to be able to see a play. Any other suggestions for mother-daughter trips?

Tish, Please help. I am trying to help our small group of young ladies plan a nice weekend get-away for January. They (we) had our hopes set on the Mall of America and I just noticed that the $153 special will end November 17th. It will be apprx 10 people traveling from Milwaukee on a small budget. What can you suggest.

I love my Brighton-inspired luggage. I think I’ve had it about a year now, have used it on every trip and it holds up very well. A few nicks in the small round plastic trim at the corners, but it is a very small area, nothing much. Also the bag holds a lot more than it looks like it could. I can pack several outfits, cosmetics, a pair of shoes, etc. By the way, it’s expandable. Zippers, handles work fine. If you can find it, I think you’ll love it, too.

Hi, Looking for a getaway for 6 girlfriends. One has been unemployed for awhile so $$ is a consideration. We would like warmth. Don’t want to spend too much time in airports and wouldn’t be opposed to driving. I live in Rochester, 1 lives in NJ, 3 in DE and 1 in VA. Any ideas?
